Hair is not always easy to manage, especially, coarse hair. What is Coarse Hair? Coarse hair can be identified by a thick hair shaft. This hair texture has the widest and largest circumference of any other. Unlike thin or medium hair, coarse hair contains all three layers of the hair shaft — cortex, cuticle, and medulla.

Black Folks Have The Coarsest Hair

Black folks in particular have the coarsest hair of all people. It’s sometimes likened to being called nappy hair, which is hard to comb and manage due to the strength and texture of the hair. Many people in the African American community speak about being tender-headed, due to how tough our hair can be to comb and manage it.

In most cases, other cultures may suffer more from the above deficiencies than black folks. But our deficiencies come in other ways, we are not obsolete in this area. Having coarse hair can be challenging when you don’t manage it well. Putting chemicals in your hair that work against the natural shape, texture, and color harms your hair. Black hair is unique because it is the antennae that connects black folks to the universe. The way your hair is coiled allows you to receive universal transmissions in a way that no other race can. The melanin in your hair makes it distinct in the shape and texture of your hair.

You Have to Treat Your Hair With Care

Black people’s hair has to be treated in a certain manner for it to stay healthy. Here are five tips that can help you take better care of your hair:

  1. Watch your diet too much pork, beef, chicken, sugars, or processed foods can damage the scalp and hair stands.
  2. Stop putting chemicals in your hair like hair relaxers. – Hair loss and Scalp burns are occurring as a result
  3. Take vitamins and minerals to help with the growth and the texture of your hair – Vitamins like A, E, C, and D.
  4. Stay away from hair products that have parabens, formaldehyde, phthalates, polyethylene glycol, sulfates, triclosan, sodium laureth sulfate, and alcohol-based products.
  5. Use oils like Hemp, Rose Mary, Coconut, Jojoba, Shea Butter, Avocado, and Jamaican Castor Oil.

Coarse hair can be a headache or a blessing, it just depends on, how you manage it. Black people have to put their hair at the top of self-care, to not lose, its texture, color, body, and length. Learning how to take care of coarse hair is a process we all would agree is necessary.
