Spread the love

Cancerous synthetic hair braids have Black Women’s hair care under scrutiny. The weave industry used to be laughable back in the late nineties, until it wasn’t, and then weave became popular. Popular comedians and celebrities started to brag about the hair they got, which led to a firestorm of sales in the black community. Weaves, fake braids, and extensions became as common as Apple pie, and everybody had some.

Hip Hop Culture Helped Boost Synthetic Hair Braids

As hip-hop culture grew, so did, synthetic hair. Hip-hop artists like Lil Kim, Faith, Foxy Brown, Mary J, and female R&B groups like SWV, Envogue, Xscape, and others started to put a little weave into their hair, as well. Black women wearing synthetic hair became very popular. The artificial hair care industry got hot when hip-hop got hot. Hip hop culture being a global phenomenon, helped to push, fake hair. All your favorite female artists had a touch of weave or synthetic braids somewhere. From the video vixen to the co-host, all the way down to the street teams and promoters had some sort of add-on to their natural hair.

Going into the late 90s into the 2000s synthetic hair became even more popular. Black women’s synthetic hair took on a life of its own, More and more female artists went for the bundle packs of weave and fake braids. Getting perms that didn’t have cancerous chemicals in the products, was never a topic of discussion, for most black women. Looking cute and feeling cute was the goal. Many Artists’ mass appeal, and popularity, made so many other women want to be a part of the style that hip-hop artists were wearing.

Commercials starring some of your hottest hip-hop artists helped to push black women’s synthetic hair products into the homes of millions, especially the underprivileged.

Black Women’s Fake Hair Causing Cancer

While all this is happening in hip-hop culture, no one is talking about how many black women are getting cancer, as a result, of wearing synthetic hair. The chemicals in the synthetic hair are cancerous and are damaging women’s health.

Popular hair brands like Sensationnel, Magic Fingers, and Shake-N-Go were all found to have carcinogens–chemicals that could be linked to cancer. – Black doctor.org

Black Women’s most popular styles like locs, braids, and twists are more susceptible to cancerous chemicals due to how long hair is worn. Due to these and other harmful chemicals, Black women are turning up with breast cancer, brain cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, and others. Synthetic hair is killing our women quietly and no one is talking about it. These women, especially the younger women have to learn to stay away from chemicals that pose a potential threat to things like childbirth.

Women should consider the following when when using synthetic hair……

Stay away from hair products that have

  1. Parabens
  2. Formaldehyde
  3. Phthalates
  4. Polyethylene glycol
  5. Sulfates, triclosan
  6. Sodium laureth sulfate
  7. Alcohol-based products

Today’s hair care market is so full of chemicals that it’s only a matter of time before more women get sick. These cancerous chemicals are causing their hair to fall out, along with issues with their menstrual cycle. Synthetic hair braids have a lot of women going to the hospital but they don’t know why. Cancerous products are at the disposal of so many black women which is alarming. We stand to lose the next generation of babies, as a result of it.

Conclusion

Synthetic hair in the form of braids, weaves, and extensions is killing our women softly. They’re dying to look good literally and falling victim to cancer. If Black women don’t fall in love with their natural hair, we don’t stand a chance of stopping the madness. Wearing other people’s hair is not the move when God blessed you with your own hair in texture, color, and style. The words cancerous and synthetic need to be placed on the labeling so women know exactly what their buying.

Hopefully, the industry will be audited and changes will be made.
